Background and Aim: The liver, as one of the most vital organs of the body, is always exposed to damage caused by the use of various drugs. Considering the tendency of people to use traditional medicines and the application of modern cell therapy methods, in this study, the therapeutic effects of flavonoids and stem cells differentiated into pancreatic beta cells on liver enzymes were investigated.
Materials and Methods: 30 male Wistar rats were selected and divided into 6 groups. The first control group, the second diabetic group, the third and fourth diabetic experimental groups received 50 and 100 mg/kg of green walnut shell flavonoids for three weeks, respectively, and then the fifth and sixth diabetic experimental groups received mesenchymal stem cells differentiated into beta cells with 50 and 100 mg/kg of flavonoids, respectively. After anesthesia of the animals, their blood samples were used for biochemical tests.
Results: Treatment with flavonoids and differentiated mesenchymal stem cells significantly reduced the activity of alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase enzymes; such that this reduction in the level of alanine aminotransferase in experimental group 4 and the level of alkaline phosphatase in experimental groups 1 and 3 was greater than that in the control group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results showed that flavonoids and differentiated mesenchymal stem cells can protect the liver from damage caused by the effects of diabetes and have beneficial effects on the reduction of its enzymes
