Aim and Background: This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of mountain honey and coriander honey from Ilam province on skin wound healing.
Materials and Methods: 30 mice were randomly divided into three groups of 10, including control, treatment with mountain honey, and treatment with coriander honey. After creating a standard wound on the left flank of the mice, treatment samples were placed on the wound surface every other day. In the control group, the wound was washed with 0.9% normal saline. For histological evaluation, sampling of wound tissue and healthy skin was performed in the stages of inflammation, proliferation, restructuring, and wound closure and stained with hematoxylin-eosin.
Results: In the mountain honey treatment group, the wound size in the inflammation, proliferation, restructuring, and closure phases was 17.48, 12.09, 5.38, and finally 0 mm, respectively, which showed a complete recovery process. In the final phase of healing, the growth of Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli bacteria was not observed, and the antibacterial properties of honey were confirmed. Histological examination showed significant cellular regeneration and hair regrowth in the damaged area.
Conclusion: Topical application of mountain honey on the wound surface every other day accelerated the healing process, reduced the duration of inflammatory phases, and improved skin structure. Therefore, mountain honey is more effective than coriander honey in healing skin wounds and can be considered as a natural option in wound healing.
